Essentials in Basketball Online Betting

Basketball online betting is arguably the easiest of the four major sporting events to bet on. Like football, there are different ways of betting in basketball. In some instances, point spread method is used. Over/under wagers are quite popular as well. If you have tried putting your money on a football game in the past, chances are you will not have a hard time in basketball.

This point spread method of wagering in basketball is the most popular. Here, the sportsbook declares one of the competing teams to be a handicap so that the game is placed on equal grounds. In this method, there is a favorite (the team expected to win) and an underdog (the team expected to lose). For betting purposes, the favorite lays some scored for the underdog.

To state it simply, Totals or Over/Under method involves predicting the total score of the two teams combined. A number will be posted and bettors are expected to predict whether the total score is over or under this number.

Money Line method, on the other hand, involves simply predicting which team wins the competition. However, this is done without the point spread. Instead, odds are used to predict which team is more likely to win.

Also known as exotic bets, parlays and teasers require bettors to give an accurate prediction of which teams wins two or more games.
Basketball online betting is definitely not difficult. It ranks second to football when it comes to the most popular sport bet on.

NBA Finals Preview And Odds For Basketball Online Betting Fans

This years NBA finals offer great deals for both Dirk Nowitzki and LeBron James, as both franchise players still seek for their first NBA title, making game 1 a blockbuster treat for basketball online betting fans.

The Breakdown

For Lebron, this finals is his best chance to quiet all the critics (especially the Cavs fans who felt betrayed after James left them) and get his first ring. For Dirk, his long awaited rematch after an embarrassing loss in 2006 is right in his doorsteps. It is really imperative for Dirk to come up aggressive this time around, as it would most likely be his final chance.

Both Mavs and Heat have eliminated tough teams during their trip to the finals, with Heat beating their arch nemesis Boston Celtics and the newly revamped squad of NY Knicks while Mavs swept the defending champ LA Lakers and ended OKCs dream of shot to the finals. Both Mavs and Heat also have lost only three times in the playoffs.

I'm pretty confident that we won't be seeing late game collapse like those in other teams and match-ups in the previous round in the playoffs, as both teams are veteran squads, with J. Kidds' leadership and Dirk's clutch performance for the Mavs, and big 3's big shots and defensive stops for the Heat squad.

Mavs won 10 of their past 11 games, and one of the biggest reason for that is Dirk's career performance against the OKC (made 24 of 24 free throw shots). Now, the buzz is about who's going to guard Dirk, and if possible, stop the 7 footer one-hand-one-foot shooter from making and-one plays. Well, I'm a Dallas fan, but I think Miami is not so concerned about Dirk, as they can simply pressure him from the ball or rotate and double-team him from the post. Heat has the younger and more athletic squad, and it won't be that hard for them to solve the Dirk problem. What I want to see from the Mavs is to let its supporting cast step-up for scoring, namely JJ Barea, J. Terry and Peja Stojakovic at the perimeter and Shawn Marion and Stevenson for slashing and Chandler for back-to-basket points, and these are all possible with J. Kidds floor leadership. Dirk is a streaky shooter, and Miami knows that. I expect Bosh to pressure him and D.Wade to come over for double team the moment he makes his move to the paint. But Dirk can score at will, regardless if he's hot or not.

The biggest challenge for Miami right now the rebounding, and we've seen their problem controling the boards in their series against Bulls, as they let Chicago average 14 offensive rebounds per game.

Because unlike Bulls, Dallas have more shooters who will be willing to take long shots after an offensive rebound. For that, I am expecting Mike Miller to be on the much more longer to stretch the defense and Udonis Haslem to contribute with the rebounding.

Heat may have the better first 5, but Dallas certainly have the deeper bench here. Remember how Dallas' bench scored 83 points in their game against the Lakers in the second roud? That was the total output of entire Lakers squad. The longer this series goes, the better for the Mavs. Also, D.Wade will really be banged-up for variety of defenders, and I'm expecting J.Kidd to be in front of him all game long, just like what he did to Kobe in their series.

Caron Butler has a slight chance to play in the finals, and I'm really hoping and praying for that. Though I don't expect for him to play long minutes, the toughness of this guy is enough to push his teammates to their limits.
Chris Bosh will be the X factor for the Heat, and when he's on, he really is a tough nut to crack. But we all know that if he's out, he really is out. So I expect Eric Spoelstra to give the ball to the paint with Bosh and get him going.

But it certainly won't be a walk in the parl for Bosh, at least in the paper, as the twin towers of Mavs (Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood) will make him earn for every shot he makes. Mav's X factor will be Shawn Marion. He's the only legitimate player in Mav's squad to guard LeBron James. His length, fast hands and athleticism should be all over LeBron right from the start. Also, Marion should score from offensive rebounds and put-backs to frustrate Miami's defense.

Game 1 odds? I think I'll for for Miami – 190 in the spreadsheets. Heat will host the Mavs in game 1 and Heat is 8-0 at home in the post-season while Dallas is 5-2 on the road. But that's just for game 1 folks.

UNLV Basketball Forward Chace Stanback Busted For DUI

Different summer and different legal woe facing the UNLV Men’s Basketball team, and another problem for UNLV Rebels college basketball online betting fans. The UCLA transfer and now UNLV's top returning player Chace Stanback, who leads all returning players in scoring and rebounding, was pulled over for over speeding near his off-campus residence last Friday, and later arrested on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence charges.

This incident looks like just another problem for the UNLV Men's basketball team, as last summer Tre'von Willis faced charges after allegedly taking a woman's mobile phone so she could not call for help after she was assaulted and choked.

The attention of college sports book betting fans, UNLV fans and media is now on UNLV head coach Dave Rice, and his disciplinary actions he might bequeath to their forward Chace Stanback.
It was in 2008 when a local Las Vegas talent and UNLV then-sophomore guard Marcus Lawrence was ditched from the team by former team coach Lon Kruger after he was arrested from DUI charges. His case was a little more severe though, as he wrecked his car far from the campus and ran away from the scene.

While the penalty for Stanback will not be as severe as Lawrence, the Rebel faithful are now left to put their heads together on what will happen to their best returning players. The penalty handed down to Willis faced a lot of scrutiny when he was suspended for only 4 games, but joined the team's 2 exhibition games.

Now, the same fans are waiting to see what coach Rice will do to his returning player. While I expect Stanback to be suspended for a minimum of 2 games and maybe a maximum of 5.

The UNLV Rebels the whole summer to work through this dilemma, and anticipate his August 11th court date. I'm hoping this is just a minor bump on the road for the Rebels, as I know they will make a good run this season.

How Good Is Dirk Nowitzki For Sports Book Betting

The Dallas Mavericks seems to be in the spotlight in most sports book betting sites now, and we can safely say one player had carried this team for the past decade.

Many say Dallas Mavericks All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki is in what should be that “twilight” of his NBA career, but that's just if you base it solely in his years of service as a franchise player in his team.

Rick Pitino, Boston Celtics head coach from 1997 – 2001 once compared Nowitzki to Celtic's legend Larry Bird after 45 minutes of private workout where Dirk showcased his versatile shooting, passing and rebounding skills.

Dirk entered the NBA in 1998 as a 9th overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks, he was then traded with Dallas Maverick's 6th pick Robert Tryalor of that same draft. Dirk then joined the captain shooting guard Michael Finley and 7'6 foot center Shawn Bradley in Mevericks whose last playoff appearance was in 1990. Nowitzki had a rough start in his first games of his career in NBA prior to 1998-99 NBA season. Standing 7 foot tall, the lanky 20-year old Dirk played as a power forward for the Mavs. But his size and shooting finesse didn't bother the athletic and muscular forwads and big men of the NBA, causing him to struggle in his shooting and being pounded in the paint by muscular big men. In his first season, Dirk only averaged 8.2 points and 3.4 rebounds for 20.4 playing time per game. Dirk was so frustrated and even admitted that he once contemplated in going back to Germany. The Mavs in that season only won 19 games of that season's 50 games schedule.

But that was all history now, as Dallas swept the defending champs in their second round in the playoffs of 2010-2011 season. Dirk looks like he's undergoing a career rejuvenation, of some sort from his 13 years in the NBA. With his athletecism, blocking, rebounding and unstippable one arm one leg elbow jumper and high-arching three point shooting, Dirk opens the debate as one of the best big men in the history of the NBA. Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle even categorized Nowitzki as one of his top 10 of all time list.

From ESPN Dallas.com:
“In my opinion, he’s a top 10 player in NBA history because of the uniqueness of his game and how he’s carried this franchise on his back for over a decade,” Carlisle told “ESPN First Take” on Monday. “He’s just right. He’s leading the team. His shot-making is great. He’s passing the ball great. He’s one of the guys that’s directing traffic for us defensively.”
Sure, Nowitzki has been the league MVP (2006-07), and he’s been the one constant on the floor during the Mavericks’ run of 11 consecutive 50-win seasons. Only the Bill Russell-led Boston Celtics (1959-1968), the Magic Johnson-led Lakers (1980-91) and the Tim Duncan-led San Antonio Spurs (2000-present) have had comparable runs.
Those teams, however, won championships. Dirk has yet to win an NBA title, making his only Finals appearance in 2006 when the Mavericks lost to the Miami Heat in six games.
“He’s got one thing missing from the mantle and that drives him,” Mavs president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson told ESPN 103.3 FM on Monday morning. “We’ve maybe been spoiled by how good he is.”

We've all been indulged by Nowitzki's brilliance in the hardcourt. I mean, He has been the centerpiece of a playoff caliber team for roughly the past decade. How many players have single handedly taken his team to 11 consecutive 50 win seasons? Kobe had Shaq, Lamar, Fisher, Gasol. Jordan had Pipen. Ducan has Ginobli, and Parker. Who has Dirk had throughout the years? Players have come, and players have gone in Dallas. But the level of play has remained the same. Dirk continues to put up huge numbers, especially in the playoffs. Now that he has Kidd, Terry, Chandler and Barea, I can't see the Mavericks team not getting attention in basketball online betting and not heading for the finals this season.

He may still not have the Championship ring yet, but he's surely heading to the Hall of Fame some day.

Grizzlies +6.5 in Sports Book Betting Over Thunder

Sports book betting fans and the favored Oklahoma City Thunder was caught off-guard to Memphis Grizzlies' performance in their first game against each other in the second round of the NBA 2010-2011 playoffs.

Memphis held OKC to 101 as they scored 114 at the end of the game. But the momentum switched at the second game when Kevin Durant scored 33 points along with 11 rebounds and Russell Westbrook had a solid offensive night with his 29 points and 6 assists.

Grizzlies will really need a lot of help from their big guys like Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol to keep their team in the series with OKC, as we all know how deep Thunder's bench is. But that doesn't seem to be a big problem considering the lacking front court OKC has right now. The Gasol and Randolph (Gandolph) combo combined to an unbelievable 54 points and 23 boards, which somehow offsets the Oklahoma's one two punch combo of Westbrook and Durant who score a combined 62 points.

Games in the playoffs really comes down to the supporting casts, OKC has a lot of those, but the thing about their front court – Perkins and Ibaka is that, Randolph and Gasol are wearing them down and their back-ups are not enough to support and hold their domination of the paint and boards.

OKC only got 2-4-1 Against The Spread in their last 7 games, and Memphis is valuing 7-0-1 Against The Spread in their last 8 games overall. Memphis frontcourt wise, is simply too big to handle for the OKC, not mentioning that Grizzlies is not getting any help from its star player Rudy Gay because of injury. Memphis is really the team sports book betting fans can rely on in NBA 2010-2011 playoff predictions as they gathered 7-15-11 against the spread record in their last 23 visits to the Thunders.

Though the Thunder got the win against the Grizzlies in the second game of their playoff matchup, it is evident that they don't get that much production from their big men, as Perkins only got 2 points and Collison contributed for only 5 points. Ibaka though had a solid game with 16 points and 11 boards. The size of Grizzlies' frontcourt really matters in the game as Randolph scored 34 points and M.Gasol scored 20.

Through-out the series, I expect the Memphis to pound more for inside points against the OKC. Their 3-1 record against OKC in the regular games of the season just shows that none of the wins of their wins over Thunder came from luck, as their big guys just dominate the paint all game long. Shane Battier and Tony Allen are better perimeter defenders, which can help contain other shooters of OKC throughout the series. Underrated backcourt players of Grizzlies such as Darrell Arthur, Greivis Vasquez, and Mike Conley will be a factor all series long, and former start O.J. Mayo will surely show more of his arsenal in the next games. This is why I'm giving Grizzlies a+6.5 in sports book betting over Thunder.

Thrill in Basketball Online Betting As Underdogs Thrive in NBA Playoffs

The playoff picture may already suggest the teams that will advance in the second round, which already settle the score in spread sheets of most basketball online betting. This is because of big teams with big-three players in their starting line-ups. In the first four days of NBA 2010-11 playoffs, underdog teams are in a big way of for basketball bettors as non-favorites are just in 3-10 straight up, while underdog teams are in 10-3 in the point spread.

However, the latter seeds show signs of life in the playoffs as they beat their opponents in the first days of the playoffs. New Orleans Hornets beat Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies beat, that was quite a buzz in sports betting websites around the web, and have caused a lot of people money.

In the Western conference, basketball fans, bettors and tops seeds were stunned in the opening day of the playoffs. Spurs and Lakers both hace the home advantage, the top-seeded San Antonia were at 6.5 point favorite against Memphis. But because of Spur's electrifying shooting guard Manu Ginobilli's absence, the Spurs were unable to defend their homecourt as less Grizz rallied for a 101-98 win despite of their superstar Rudy Gay's absence.

Los Angeles Lakers too suffered the same fate as New Orleans Hornets beat them even without their All-Star forward David West. Hornets were in an 11 point underdog, but they convincingly beat LA in 109-100 win. That night's game results was marked as the first time where both top 2 seeded teams of one conference lost in playoffs since postseason format was made in 1983-84 season.
